Introduction

Alder Lake is a brand new micro-architecture using a big.LITTLE uarch so not all current software will utilize Alder Lake to its full potential. This time around I wanted to take a deep-dive to show the difference between stock and overclocked performance results. This article will show traditional synthetic benchmarks as well as benchmarks that will compare the Alder Lake micro-architecture. My goal remains the same and that is attempting to bypass the current synthetic software limitations and to get the exact performance numbers across the micro-processor. Therefore we will take a look at the stock results and the overclocked results as well as the power consumption.

Introduction

For the past month or so I have been testing and benching Alder Lake while focusing mostly on lowering the CPU voltage and wattage from the wall outlet. During that time I have managed to hit my goals while increasing performance by overclocking the E-Cores to 4.0GHz and by pushing my DDR5-4800Mhz DRAM up to DDR5-5600Mhz. I have been very conservative with my voltages and overclocks since I still have a lot to learn about the platform. I want to be sure that I am using safe voltages to prevent issues in the future. This time around I am focusing more on overclocking the Performance Cores and tightening different timings with the DDR5 modules.

Update: 11-26-2021 - L3 Latency * P-Core BW Results Updated

Introduction

After running Intel’s X58 & 1st Generation CPU for over a decade I have finally decided to upgrade to Intel’s latest and greatest, the 12th Generation Alder Lake-S CPU. There had been plenty of leaks and information leading up to Alder Lake formal reveal, but nothing was official. Intel’s Alder Lake was officially launched on October 27th 2021 and Intel also allowed pre-orders to begin. Alder Lake was officially released on November 4th 2021. Now with official information coming from Intel including the price, specifications, overclocking information and performance numbers; there was plenty to look forward to. Intel revealed that six Alder Lake CPUs would be released on their 10nm cores along with DDR5. In addition to those 6 CPUs for the consumer desktop segment there will be approximately 60 CPUs released across the entire Alder Lake CPU stack for different industries.

Introduction

On November 17th I released my Alder Lake-S Review which including a deep dive into the 12th Gen Alder Lake architecture. I have had roughly a week since then to learn more about the architecture and play around with various settings in the UEFI\BIOS. There are tons of settings in the UEFI menu and that should keep enthusiast busy for a while. I wanted to overclock my i9-12900K, but I am currently waiting on my LGA1700 brackets for my EK-360mm radiator AIO. I am currently using the LGA1200 brackets and I want to be sure that I am getting the best CPU temperatures possible before I begin to push the CPU to its limits.

In the meantime I wanted to expand on my previous findings in the previous Alder Lake article to see how efficient I could make Alder Lake. During this time I also wanted to explore overclocking the DDR5 RAM and possibly lower my DRAM latency. In this article I will provide the results of my findings. For those who want more information please be sure to check out my initial article on Intel’s 12th Generation Alder Lake micro-architecture. In this article we will be taking another deep dive to see how efficient I can make the i9-12900K.

After writing my RTX 3080 review I received a request to benchmark the X58 and the RTX 3080 in actual production related apps. In my previous RTX 3080 article I focused mostly on the gaming aspects and the synthetic benchmarks focused on Unigine, 3D Mark and CryEngine (ray tracing). This time around I will try my best to provide more information regarding the X58 & RTX 3080 while using actual programs for work & production related tasks. The two major apps I decided to use was Blender and Unreal Engine 5.
